Rumors about Dell ‘s new laptops started before the launch of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series . A leak has revealed that Dell is bringing Tandem OLED technology to their new  laptops . Within a month, Dell launched the XPS 13 9345 system, which comes with a Snapdragon processor and this great display.

What is Tandem OLED?

Tandem OLED (Tandem OLED) is a new type of OLED technology, where two layers of red, green and blue organic light are used. Conventional OLED displays typically use a layer containing these three color elements. But tandem OLED technology uses two layers, which increases the brightness and longevity of the panel. It is able to produce more light, thereby increasing the brightness of the display. In addition, the use of two layers also increases the durability of the panel, resulting in consistent image quality over a long period of time.

Another major advantage of this technology is its reduced power consumption. The use of two layers increases the efficiency of the panel, resulting in more light output using less electricity. This results in increased battery life, which is a big advantage for  laptop users.

Difference between current OLED and tandem OLED

There are several important differences between current OLED and Tandem OLED technology. These differences  make the importance and necessity of Tandem OLED even more evident.

Brightness and Durability:

  • Current OLED: Conventional OLED displays use a layer of organic light, which limits brightness and durability. Prolonged use can cause these panels to lose brightness and cause pixel burn-in.
  • Tandem OLED: Tandem OLED uses two layers of organic light, which increases brightness and durability. It is capable of offering twice the lifespan and three times the brightness of conventional OLED displays.

Power consumption:

  • Current OLED: Conventional OLED displays consume more power, resulting in reduced battery life.
  • Tandem OLED: Tandem OLED panels consume less power, resulting in longer battery life. This reduces power consumption by up to 40%.

Panel thickness and weight:

  • Current OLED: Conventional OLED displays can be relatively thick and heavy.
  • Tandem OLED: The Tandem OLED panel is about 40% thinner and 28% lighter, making the laptop more slim and portable.

LG Display has introduced the industry’s first 13-inch tandem OLED panel for laptops. These panels are much more efficient and consume less power than conventional OLED technology. The Dell XPS 13 9345 laptop uses this tandem OLED for the first time. This laptop has a 13.4-inch WQXGA+ (2880×1800) panel, which offers 100% DCI-P3 color coverage. Also, these panels are certified for Display HDR True Black 500 . Honestly, this display means an amazing visual experience.

Early reviews and pricing

An early review by XDA-Developers found that the Dell XPS 13 9345’s panel is capable of reaching 485 nits of brightness, which is 28.6% higher than the previous generation model (XPS 13+). Media ATK calls this laptop the ‘best display in a 13-inch  laptop ‘. This laptop has been launched at $1299 or around 1,53,000 Bangladeshi Taka. But upgrading to the tandem OLED panel will cost an additional $400. If you have the budget, you can definitely consider this upgrade.
